Corruption In Nigeria According to Transparency International (TI).
Corruption In Nigeria according to Transparency International declared that the war against corruption in Nigeria is a child's play. The organisation after their assessment recently said, corruption in Nigeria is in a high increase. The global watchdog in their assessment on corruption in Nigeria, shows that the anti-corruption war in the country is not yielding fruits, it's ineffective. This report by TI will be a setback and a slap to federal government efforts in fighting corruption in the country. This latest report released by the global anti-corruption watchdog, Transparency International, indicate that the scourge is getting worse.
Transparency International’s latest global corruption perception index (CPI) ranks Nigeria 148 out of 180 countries surveyed.
This assessment shows a significant drop of 12 places, compared to the country’s rating of 136th position in 2016.
Further analysis according to the organisation indicates that countries with the least protection for press and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) also tend to have the worst rates of corruption.
The report, however, also pointed out that the problem of corruption is a general trend across the world.
“This year’s corruption perceptions index highlights that the majority of countries are making little or no progress in ending corruption, while further analysis shows journalists and activists in corrupt countries risking their lives every day in an effort to speak out”.
The agency also accused the Buhari government of failing to address corruption among key government officials. Projecting the war by EFCC and ICPC as a child play not doing enough to put a stop on corruption by public office holders.
They also advised the press, media houses and activist as the key factor to combat and control corruption in every society, they cautioned and recommended government to do more to encourage free speech, independent media, political dissent and an open and engaged civil society.
“Governments should minimise regulations on media, including traditional and news media, and ensure that journalists can work without fear of aggression or attacks."
The group also mandated the activists and the government to “take advantage of the discussions and agreement by the United Nations on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to advocate and push for reforms at the national and global level. Transparency International (TI) assessment is a clear indication that Apc government 's fighting political opponent and not corruption as speculated.
