The Origin, Sights & Sounds Of Valentine's Day
Sights & Sounds Of Valentine's Day. It is estimated that over 100 million cards with over a billion text messages are exchanged annually to celebrate lovers day. Many of our youths, our present generation misinterpret the origin and the reason this man Valentine is celebrated. However, our generation took it as a period of furnication and kissing, kiss-face, taking your family member's to the beach, clubs, party all nights and all sorts and other unholy things. Meanwhile, lives are lost in some occasions, many homes are broken because of immorality done by married men and women during this celebration, our youths engaged on evil acts to certify their hearts, bad news heard after each year celebration is disheartening, the origin is far from it.
St. Valentine was a Roman Catholic priest born at Terni, Italy in 176AD. In the Roman Empire, married men were not allowed to go to war. Due to shortage of soldiers, Emperor Claudius Gothicus put a stop to marriages. He ordered priests and clergies not to unite couples in holy matrimony. Though several martyrologies have been added to later hagiographies, report had it that Valentine defiled the orders of Emperor Claudius by secretly uniting couples. He was arrested and imprisoned. A day before his execution, he as well joined two prisoners in a holy matrimony. What an epitome of love!. In the early hours of Feb 14, 273AD, he was beaten, clubbed and later beheaded. He was buried at a cemetary on the VIA FLAMINA close to PONTE MILIVIO north of Rome.
It was not until 490 AD before Pope Gelasius 1, ordered that St. Valentine should be celebrated every Feb 14. This year val celebration is the 1,528th Valentine's Day since it started. My question is, From the above story concerning Valentine's day celebration witnessed globally by young men and women the youths on every 14th February, what are the lessons learnt?
